Culture Shock

This blog post is written for Five Minute Friday. The word for today is “culture.”

The culture at that time ignored women and children, shunned the sick and the lame and threw stones at the ones who broke their law. Then came the one who shattered their culture. He shook their world when he told the story of the Good Samaritan. He created havoc when He said, “Bring the little children unto me.” He heard their gasps when he asked, “Do you notice this woman standing here?” He made a way for their cry of “death” when He called himself Son of God.

His was an upside down Kingdom. Nothing made sense and at the same time, everything made sense to those who had ears to hear and eyes to see. A woman touched the hem of his robe and was healed. She was the only one He ever called daughter. Oh, how wrong it was for him to be so familiar with a woman! Yet, He respected her. He admired her faith and courage. He had compassion for her and denounced the way she was treated by society.

A culture shock. That’s what He was. Women were no longer property to be controlled, children were not sent away or locked in cages and the stranger was not blocked by a wall or dumped on the side of the road.

Maybe it is time for eyes to see and ears to hear. Maybe it is time for another culture shock.

This I pray…Come Lord Jesus.
